Tavistock in Bloom

Every year the Chamber of Commerce co-ordinates spectacular Hanging Baskets for the Town.

In 2006, The Chamber arranged over 60 hanging baskets for specific retailers throughout Tavistock. The baskets are put up mid June, then collected again throughout October.

With current concerns about environmental practises in business, unnecessary or excessive water usage is something we need to be aware of. So we use “eco friendly” hanging baskets.

What does that mean? Well, the inner hanging basket is suspended within a reservoir of water. This has two advantages. Firstly, it’s highly water efficient – as none of the water you put in is wasted draining through (as with traditional baskets). And secondly, it means that even over a very hot week in the Summer, you will only need to water the basket a couple of times a week – rather than twice a day!

Within the Chamber, our target for this year is to display in excess of 80 hanging baskets throughout the Town. And our challenge to businesses is join in by subscribing to our initiative.

So What Happens?

As a Chamber we have negotiated a bulk deal with “Plantscape” – who are the biggest providers of hanging baskets and exterior plant displays in the UK.

Effectively, we “rent” the hanging baskets, which are filled flowers and then erected by Plantscape.

The baskets are immensley heavy in weight (over 25kg when filled with water) and consequently need to be hung from “heavy duty” bespoke brackets – fit for this purpose and to ensure health and safety standards are met.

Cheques should be made payable to Tavistock Chamber of Commerce.

For existing businesses that already have brackets, the cost is £45 per basket.

For new business joining the scheme there is a one-off charge of £25 to purchase the heavy duty basket and fixing, plus the £45 per hanging basket rental.

These hanging baskets make a spectacular contribution to the look and feel of Tavistock through out the summer. Please join us in helping make the town bloom this year.
