Christmas Lights

Every year Tavistock is brought alive by a spectacularly colourful display of Christmas Lights. The co-ordination of the erection, storage, insurance and maintenance of the these lights is undertaken wholly by The Chamber of Commerce.

The Christmas Lights are officially “switched on” at 7pm on the last Friday in November.

The Chamber liases with local bodies including West Devon Highways, Western Power and local contractors to ensure the festive lights are erected without disruption to businesses and residents throughout the Town.

The success of Christmas trading throughout Tavistock is undoubtedly enhanced by the Christmas Lights and Dickensian Evening. However, the cost of staging these lights is ever increasing – around £9,000 in 2007 and we need funds in order to make them happen.

We are hoping therefore to count on your generous support toward covering these costs and suggest the following contributing amounts – based on the size of business.

  • £150 – Multi-national Business, Bank or Building Society
  • £90 – Medium/Large Business
  • £50 – Small Business

It is vital to emphasise that without adequate funding we will unable to stage these either Dickensian Evening or Christmas Lights. In 2005, Truro were unable to stage their Christmas Lights due to a lack of funding and volunteers. This resulted in a 30% reduction in overall trade throughout the town!

So, we need your contribution. Please support the Chamber in helping to make Tavistock look truly exceptional this year, and generate the best trading Christmas period on record.
